Call for Papers: Biblical Ethics in the 21st Century

THE DEPARTMENT OF THEOLOGY AT MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY INVITES YOU TO THE
2ND ANNUAL MARQUETTE SCRIPTURE PROJECT GRADUATE CONFERENCE BIBLICAL ETHICS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
IN MEMORY OF FR. YIU SING LÚCÁS CHAN, SJ
APRIL 8—9, 2016
MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY, MILWAUKEE, WI

Call: Our departed colleague and mentor Fr. Chan explored the intersection between Theological Ethics and Scriptural Ethics, and sought to build bridges between biblical scholars and moral theologians. To honor his legacy, this conference aims to explore and further his project. We welcome proposals for papers from all disciplines focusing on the intersection of Ethics and Scripture. Potential topics may include but are not limited to: Criteria for a Scripture- based moral theology (theory/hermeneutics); historical or contemporary exemplars of Scripture-based moral reasoning (Hebrew Bible, Second Temple, New Testament, Patristics, and beyond); constructive, issue-oriented, Scripture-based moral theology (applied ethics). Proposal should be limited to 250 words and are due Jan. 15, 2016. Some selected papers will be eligible for partial or complete travel reimbursement.

Speakers: Fr. James Keenan, SJ (Boston College) will deliver the Simmons Lecture in Ethics and Morality on Friday evening. There will be four other plenary addresses, delivered by Prof. George Griener, SJ (Jesuit School of Theology, Santa Clara University, CA); Fr. Bryan Massingale (Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI); Prof. Gina Hens-Piazza (Jesuit School of Theology, Santa Clara University, CA); and Fr. John Donahue, SJ (Loyola University Maryland).

Published Festschrift : We anticipate that selected papers from the conference will be published in a Festschrift for Fr. Chan.

Questions and submissions should be directed to the conference organizers, Paul M. Pasquesi and Paul Cizek, at MarquetteScriptureProject@gmail.com.
